ideas

Before you get your Santa shorts in a bunch (I love that saying), I adore Christmas!!  No hate comments please!  I have just been thinking about the waste it creates and I would like to find real solutions that regular people can/will do.  If you are someone who uses leaves instead of toliet paper than I may not be able to relate :)

As I have been writing this post I recently read a few articles in this months Women’s Day magazine with some suggestions.  The article “To You, From Me” by Paula Spencer talks about how we need to put the thought into a present to avoid waste (at least that’s what I got out of the article).  I really agree with this.  And there was a little section on “Have An Earth-Friendly Holiday” by Amanda Greene that had some suggestions as well.

I enjoy receiving Christmas cards but not so much sending them out.  I think more and more people are the same way and so it just becomes something for a lot of us to do.  Then we just get a card with some names and a quick “Hi” if that.  It has me wondering about the waste of it all.  You purchase the cards $$(unless you are more Martha and make them), write in them, and pay the postage $$.  Don’t forget about the time doing them (this is only a waste if it’s nothing very personal or just to get them done.)  After Christmas the cards are then given to organizations that do crafts, recycled, or most get thrown away.

So what to do?  If you send out E-Cards it is not exactly cozy and not everyone has email.  I would love some suggestions in regards to this.  Of course recycled paper is a good way to go but are there any other ideas on this?  I am not overboard with this so I am not looking for using fallen tree bark via the wind as an answer :)   I am looking for more thoughts on how not to be so wasteful in this area.

As far as gift wrap is concerned, here are a few of mine:

  • You can use pillowcases
  • Recycled paper
  • Newspaper,
  • Paper bags that can be decorated
  • Reusable gift bags and boxes NOTE:  When you use these things try to put a note for the recipient to “Please use this item again.  I won’t tell anyone.” or “Recycle me.  I’m too pretty to be thrown away.” or “Please don’t throw me away.  It stinks in there”.

When it comes to gifts I have talked about in previous posts about some ideas.  There is a movement to only buy consumable things that way there is no clutter with things that people may not use.  Of course, homemade gifts, done tastefully, can be a good way to go and help on costs.  Donations to charities that the recipient supports works very well.  Any ideas??

With decorations I am learning the less is more option.  I LOVE Christmas and do love to decorate.  Now I don’t have a Santa toilet cover or a inflatable reindeer in my yard but I do have too much stuff.  I am going through, much to my hubby’s delight, my stuff this year and really looking at what should stay and what should go.  I still want my house to warm and Christmasy, but I want to use more things that are natural and easy rather than complicated and obnoxious.

Start sending the ideas.  I may not be able to do them this year but may be able to use them next year.

I found this on the Rachel Ray Magazine website: http://www.rachaelraymag.com.  I thought they wrapped them very nicely.  What a nice little gift for those coming over to your home for dinner.  If you want some for yourself, use cheese cloth and drop in some apple juice/cider for a nice hot drink when it’s cold outside.  ENJOY!

Make Potpourri
DIY 1. Slice: Thinly slice leftover fruit and place with cinnamon sticks on a cooling rack over a baking sheet.
2. Dry: Place the pan in a 200° oven and bake until dry, 2 to 3 hours, flipping the pieces halfway through.
3. Bag: Fill sachets (available at craft stores) with the fruit, then tie shut; give to guests as they leave.

Have you ever noticed that if you go to the Doctor who is on the heavy side he/she will probably not talk to you about your weight?  I believe this is also true in the church.  We, as a church BODY, do not really discuss this topic too much, other than an occasional diet group, as we might be called to change our own habits.

Now I have to advise that I am not some health nut or a stick figure.  I am a person who has struggled with my weight since I was about 11 and have been able to maintain a stable and healthy weight that with the Lord’s help have been able to manage for many years.   I could use to loose more but want to be careful about yo-yo dieting and doing major damage.  I don’t think I will ever be a size 2.  Even my Dad said that, and I had the notion that I would prove him wrong, but I never have.  But the church has never been apart of a lifestyle or eating change for me.  Now there is no perfect weight or body but I believe the church can be apart of making a difference in children’s, and all members, lives by being healthier.

I read an article from Parenting Magazine and it stated “A 2003 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that obese children “enjoy” a quality of life slightly less cheerful than that of kids on chemotherapy.” WOW!  I don’t think I should be shocked though as this was my experience.  I can also see it in the kids at my children’s school.  Don’t we want to minister to these children?

It seems like everyone is concerned, as Doctor’s are about our weight, but we don’t want to change ourselves.  Give up the donut hour at church?  Offer kids less treats in a church and I think you would be breaking the 11th commandment “Thou shalt have tons of junk food while a kid and don’t withhold any yest ye shall be a bad parent (IWDWIWV -I want to do what I want version)” or something like that.  At every church we attend there is a massive involvement of food.  Kids eat dinner at the Wednesday night program with a dessert and one hour later, in their class, it’s junk foodpaloza with a bag of candy.  Kids can regulate their own food most protest.  Yes, we can see this at the local school playground.

Now I am not talking massive changes here.  I would love to challenge the BODY OF CHRIST to  commit to sharing the theology of our body as the Lord’s temple.  We love to talk about abortion because we may have never been in that situation but don’t talk to me about my pastries!  I think it would be great to make commitments not only financially but the giving of our bodies to the Lord as his.

So what kind of changes could a church do:

  • 100% juices, milk or water.  No soda machines on church grounds.  I find it interesting that parents will complain that schools shouldn’t take the revenues from soda machines but what about churches?
  • Make a commitment to no trans fats and use lean meats.
  • Make better food choices when your church serves food such as low-fat or no-fat dressings and whole wheat bread instead of white
  • Exercise for children during their extended classes.  When my son attended Awana’s they played very active games.
  • Bible studies around nutrition and exercise.
  • Ask the congregation to make an effort to encourage healthy choices for potlucks.
  • Fitness or nutritional pledges like we do financial ones
  • Support groups for accountability
  • Limit candy.  Can I get a witness?  This is the hard one for all the Grandma’s out there.  People really don’t understand just how much junk children are exposed to in this day and age.  For example a child’s week Monday -cafeteria lunch -chicken nuggets carrots thrown away, Tuesday – Went to the bank and they have to give the kids a treat, Wednesday- Junkpaloza at church after the cake they had for dessert, Thursday- It’s somebodies birthday at your son’s school and they brought goodies, Friday – Mom’s tired of cooking let’s get a pizza, Saturday – Jimmy’s birthday party and ice cream after the baseball game, Sunday - Donuts at church-yum!  This is what I think a light week is.  We didn’t even cover the soda’s, frosted flakes for breakfast, and the trips to McDonald’s.
  • Encourage activities at church that are active like a hiking group instead of a pizza group.
  • Don’t hand out food as a reward!  Give out stickers, toys, certificates, bring the kids up in front of the congregation.
  • Make sure fruits and veggies are served at meals held at the church.
  • Hold a jump rope event contest
  • Bring in speakers that will discuss these Godly principals
  • Host health events that will bring in professionals to test blood pressure and other health issues
  • Encourage families to have treats for treats.  Everything is a special occasion.  Kids have a special occasion 10 times a week instead of previous generations.  Another generation it might have been special if Mom had cake for dessert.  I think kids are too familiar with junk that it is part of their normal eating habits and are no longer special.  Have bulletin inserts about these tips and other nutritional ideas.  Keep it in front of the church members.

Why make these changes?  “Obese children are nearly twice as likely to grow up to be obese adults. And a child who keeps the weight on through adolescence and into adulthood has a good chance of developing serious medical problems, according to Gerald Berenson, M.D., professor of medicine and pediatrics at Tulane University Medical School and a lead researcher of one of the longest-running studies on childhood obesity and heart disease. “By the time they’re teens, many have the beginnings of heart disease or diabetes,” he says. Early puberty — common among both overweight boys and girls — has been linked to breast cancer in women later in life. And cancer of the ovaries, uterus, colon, rectum, and prostate are also more common in obese adults.  Studies also show that overweight kids ages 6 and older tend to have fewer friends, are less involved with extracurricular activities, are more depressed, and have lower self-esteem than their thinner peers.” -taken from Parenting Magazine, Preventing Childhood Obesity by Laura Muha.

This is a different world in which we have to make necessary changes to our habits.  It seems when you make these types of changes there is much opposition because helping the children means changing ourselves.  Other opposition might come as ”People won’t come to church because we don’t offer this kind of food”.  Well then let’s make sure we don’t tell them Jesus is the Way, Truth, and Life either then.  This is God’s vessel and we are in charge of taking care of it.

Blessings,

Debbie aka The Real World Martha

So I have way too many Christmas containers out in my garage!!!  I need to purge.  I am learning to work with what I have and use simple and natural things to decorate with.  Here are a few tips and postings from other blogs to help us go more simple with our Christmas this year:

Feel free to add any other great Christmas blogs or sites.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…well maybe somewhere.   So why isn’t the Christmas picture palm trees and sand instead of snow and fir trees?  Wasn’t the first Christmas in the desert? :)

OK, I have promised you some ideas for gift baskets.  I use to own a gift basket business so I feel like I have a few ideas but try whatever works for you:

Go to fullsize image                  Go to fullsize image                        Go to fullsize image

  • Local Products – Give products that are made only in your town or state.  This can be a great way to support local businesses and show off your town/state to those you love.
  • The Best of the Best - Oprah does it and so can you.  Gather up a few of your families favorite things and put them in a basket.  “These are a few of our favorite things.”  Think favorite movie, snacks, music, shampoo, etc.  Anything can be fun when they know it was the best you’ve tried.  Just make sure that it would be something that person would use.  This can be great to make several and give as a family gift.
  • Favorite Products- If you know someone really well try to include all their favorite items.  Favorite soda, candy, etc.  I have done an inexpensive basket with just a 6 pack of favorite soda and their favorite snacks for under $10.
  • Homemade Products- Have each person in the family make something and put them all together for a gift.  Picture frames, ornaments, beauty products (see my blog on homemade ones), etc.
  • For the Reader – Pack up any of these items blanket, slippers, gift certificate, coupon for reading time (good for Mom) book, gift certificate, magazine, coffee, coffee mug tea for a wonderful gift.
  • Beautiful – For someone into beauty take a list from a magazine of top beauty products and give the article as well as the products.  This is great for any lady but also works well for most teenage girls.
  • Off to College- If you know someone who just went away to college for the first time they might enjoy stamps, quarters, laundry detergent, sewing kit, hangers, coupon for an oil change, etc.  Think practical as they usually don’t have much money.  Put it in a container that they can use (Rubbermaid or such) or a laundry basket and make it look terrific with a big bow and great tissue.
  • Save the Planet- If you know someone who is wanting or starting to change their habits to protect the environment try a basket (from Goodwill) with a reusable cloth napkin, energy efficient bulbs, a plant, etc.  Check for Planet Friendly Products at www.goodhousekeeping.com (The best of Everything article had a list of options).
  • Cooks Unlimited – Give your favorite recipe and the tools and non-perishable items to make it.
  • BBQ Chef- In a Large oven mitt place some standard BBQ supplies like ketchup, mustard, wooden skewers, BBQ rubs or sauce, outdoor utensils, etc.
  • Beach Bum- Is someone going to a tropical location for the holidays or soon?  Give them sunscreen, reading material, aloe-vera lotion, and a photo album in a beach bag.
  • Health Nut – This is very inexpensive but can’t be done ahead of time.  Gather a bunch of seasonal fruit along with some packaged or homemade granola and some nuts for your health nut!
  • Christmas Morning Basket - Fill a mixing bowl or Christmas basket with goodies to eat Christmas Morning.  Prepackaged or homemade muffins, cookies, pancake mix, jam, wassail mix, syrup, fruit, coffee, tea or whatever you can think of to make sure Christmas breakfast will be fun and easy.  Don’t forget to write on the tag to open on Christmas Eve.

Remember the key is to keep a theme and think inexpensive items to go with it.  Don’t forget the packaging!  You can always use a standard basket (some of which you get via resale stores) but use other items as well such as pretty boxes, useful items, bowls, reusable plastic containers, colander, platter, cloth shopping bag, cookie sheet, pot for plants, metal bucket, etc.  Use tissue paper, towels, napkins, bandannas, etc for lining.

These are just a few ideas.  I should have one more blog with ideas before the holidays are here so please check back.  If you need help with a person and want an idea, please leave a comment and I will do my best to see if I can come up with an idea.  Also, if you have some unusual ideas for people that are hard to buy for please leave your ideas for all of us to try.

I saw this post on another blog and thought it was great as I would like to make the most of mine.  Check out 5 tips for efficient blogging (or something else):

http://scribbit.blogspot.com/search/label/blogging

Have a GREAT blogging day!

OK, so I have a little bit of everything today.

It’s one of those days when:

  • You wrap your hair in your towel and go about putting on your makeup etc.  A few minutes later you need to wipe your hands on your towel and can’t figure out where it went.  It’s sad but true.
  • You name your blog Potluck Thursday when it’s really Wednesday.  Or is it????
  • You where khaki pants and a red shirt and inadvertently shop at Target that day.  Guess how many people come and ask you what aisle the toilet paper is kept?
  • Your electric toothbrush stops (because you forgot to charge it!) and you stop and wonder what to do now!

For those of you who are interested in more homemade gifts I saw on the Women’s Day website 15 min crafts (now that’s for me!)

    visit:   http://www.womansday.com/article.asp?article_id=11396

For those interested I got a hair cut.  Why is this a big deal.  Well it’s been over a year and the tangles where driving me crazy (now what’s going to be my excuse?).  I feel 1o pounds lighter.  OK, maybe 2 :)

TRAVEL TIPS:  These are from my lovely Aunt Diane.   Go to fullsize image

I have two travel tips which took me years to discover.

The shrinking suit case:

No matter what size suit case I have from a carry-on to a 32″ duffel bag, it is never big enough for the “stuff” I take.

When I get to my hotel room, the clothes explode everywhere (I brought too much!!), getting them re-packed to leave is NOT fun because I am sure the suit case shrunk!!  One overseas three-week vacation, I needed to packed both fun and a wedding – too much stuff.  On a whim, I put every item in a zip-lock plastic bag (little ones and big ones).  I wear so much black I used a black marker to write “long black skirt”, “black butterfly top”, etc.  The rest I could see the item.

This time clothing explosion was a piece of cake!!

WOW, I got to the first hotel, rummaged through looking for one outfit, plastic bags of clothes flew everywhere.  When I found the ones I wanted for all the plastic bags were easily thrown back into the suit cases.  For three weeks I didn’t have the extra work of re-packing at each hotel and my room looked nice each day!!

Shampoo and Conditioner

In a snack size plastic bag, I put enough shampoo or conditioner for one hair washing.  In the shower, I open the plastic bag turn it inside out, rub the side of the plastic back with the shampoo on my hair, the throw the bag out.   No bottles that leak in flight and no space in the suit case is required.

And One Last Thought:

OK, so I have been wondering why if Hollywood is so open to ALL people how come I don’t think I would fit in.  Almost every article regarding Rachel Ray (whom I think is fabulous) deals with weight.  She is a size 6 for goodness sake!  The average size of women is 12 so why do they keep addressing this as if she is not small?  And heaven forbid you are conservative or a Christian.  I just read an article, while getting my hair cut, and Patricia Heaton gets death threats because of her conservatism and Christian beliefs.  She also believes that she may not get another shot if this new show of hers (which I haven’t watched) doesn’t work because of her beliefs and the criticism she gets from the Hollywood crowd.  I don’t understand.  I guess I don’t have the right dress size to understand!

Bye For Now,

If you aren’t familiar with this program, I would recommend checking it out.  It is run by Samaritan’s Purse which is under Franklin Graham (Billy Graham’s son).  You pack a shoe box of things for children (their is a list of things that are ok to send and not ok) and then it goes to a child in need all over the world.  It is the only gift they will probably receive.  Can you imagine your child not receiving anything for Christmas?

The collection week in Nov 12-19.  This is such a great family or church activity.  We have participated now for about 10 years.  Please check it out! www.samaritanspurse.org or call 1-800-353-5949

If you want to save a few bucks and make your own air freshener you can take some liquid fabric softener and add to a spray bottle.  Fill the rest with water.  This will save you money as you won’t be paying for the water when you buy this already made at the store.  (Don’t forget to label what you have.)
